READ MORE: Werewolves Within – Film Review But once I actually started watching the film I was surprised by how much comedy was in the mix, and how the real story seemed to be a romance between Chow Yun-Fat’s character and the aunt of the girl he was protecting. The synopsis made it sound like Chow Yun-Fat was going to be putting his life on the line to defend this little girl against killers and criminals, and the trailer featured a lot of violence and bloody moments. On the surface, Wild Search seemed like it was going to be a gritty cop drama. Even though it's not as obtuse as a lot of his other movies, all of Lynch's obsessions are there like 1950s Americana, this very heightened version of California (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood actually gave me Lynch vibes), rock music, children escaping their awful parents, and dreams, of course.Wild Search is the latest Hong Kong 80’s action flick to get a beautiful new Blu-ray release courtesy of Eureka Entertainment, and it sees Chow Yun-Fat playing a police officer who ends up having to protect a little girl after her mother is killed when a gun smuggling deal goes wrong. That said, I guess it can be quite confronting to a lot of people. Like most his work, the tone switches between very dark and very (darkly) comedic, but they never seen disparate because it all comes together through his over the top style and strangeness. It's got his trademark style while also having a fairly straightforward plot-it's a road movie where two people who are crazy for one another run off to California, but along the way they have misadventures and run-ins with very eccentric characters. not including the handful of 'normal' movies he's made like The Elephant Man or The Straight Story).
